The NYC School of Highland Dance was founded in August of 2022 with a goal to extend the reach and scope of high-quality Highland Dancing instruction in New York City while staying connected to the broader Scottish arts community.

We offer a schedule of regular weekly classes in Manhattan, coordinate performance opportunities, provide competition preparation, and more! Our instructors are certified through the British Association of Teachers of Dance and the U.S. Center for Safesport.

About Highland Dancing:

Highland dancing is traditional, competitive solo dancing originating from Scotland. Many of the dances have ancient origins, and others were choreographed more recently as celebrations of Scottish culture.

Considered both a sport and an artform, Highland dance improves agility, coordination, and balance while teaching goal setting, resilience, and adaptability. Children who participate in Highland dancing tend to excel in school as it is one of the very few activities to exclusively use cross-lateral integration, which wires the brain for learning and improves academic skills and memory. They will start by learn developmentally-appropriate dance foundations including basic coordination and listening skills, positions, and beginning movements in a fun and supportive environment. Those who attend class regularly can expect to quickly progress to learning basic traditional steps and dances.

We encourage all of our child students to compete as soon as they are ready (usually after about 1-2 years of regular class attendance). Highland dance competitions allow students to travel, meet other dancers, and track progress! The friends forged through Highland dancing last a lifetime.
